Singkil-Muslim Dance

Singkil (or Sayao sa Kasingkil)falls under Muslim dances. It is a famous Philippine dance of the Maguindanao people, but was popularized by the nearby Maranao peoples of Lake Lanao and later the Bayanihan Philippine National Folk Dance Company.

singkil

videocredit: Masterscribble

Also known as the Princess Dance or the Royal Maranao Fan Dance, the dance is based on the Maranao interpretation of the ancient Indian epic, the Ramayana: the Darangen. The Singkil narrates a scene in which Sita (Putri Gandingan) escapes her abductor, the demon king Ravana and is lost in the forests of Alangka, thereupon being found by her husband, Prince Rama. Interesting to note is that in the original Ramayana epic, Rama selects Hanuman, the Hindu monkey-god, to find Sita on his behalf; the fact that in the Singkil it is Rama (Rajah Bantugan) who finds her suggests a modification of the original Hindu narration in order to agree with monotheistic Islamic ideology.

Kasingkil refers to the art of moving one’s feet in and out of two clicking bamboo poles in imitation of Putri Gandingan who gracefully avoided the falling trees brought about by an earthquake.

Performers would therefore gracefully step in and out of bamboo poles, arranged in crisscross fashion while manipulating either fans or simply their bare hands.Played at celebrations and festivals, traditionally the dance was performed by a girl of royal blood intend on advertising herself to would-be-suitors for her future marriage.

The dance is said to have been named after either the leg bracelets or anklets of silver, nickel or brass with chiming bells of the same name or the act of voluntarily or accidentally entangling on one’s feet in either vines or tall grass.

AKO'Y KAMPUPOT

AKO'Y KAMPUPOT
Lyrics by Maning P. Velez

Ako'y kampupot
Na bagong sikat
Ang halimuyak
Sadyang laganap
Kaligayahan sa bawa't oras
Man din ang nais
Tanging paglingap

Kaya't noong minsan
Ay napakinggan
Isang binatang
Nananambitan
Puso kong taglay
Lubhang pihikan
Ay narahuyo sa panawagan.

Refrain:

Nasaan yung pangarap
Ng paglalambingan
Tangan na ng aking hirang
Alay ay kaligayahan
Kay tamis nga naman
Mabuhay 'ta sa pagmamahal
Kung ang ligaya ay makakamtam
Sa habang buhay.

Maalaala Mo Kaya

MAALAALA MO KAYA?
Constancio De Guzman

Huwag mong sabihing ikaw'y hamak
kahit na isang mahirap,
Pagka't ang tangi kong pagibig
ganyan ang hinahanap.

Aanhin ko ang kayamanan
kung ang puso'y salawahan,
Nais ko'y pagibig na tunay
at walang kamatayan.

Koro:

Maalaala mo kaya
ang sumpa mo sa akin,
Na ang pagibig mo ay
sadyang di magmamaliw.
Kung nais mong matanto,
buksan ang aking puso
At tanging larawan mo
ang doo'y nakatago.

Di ka kaya magbago
sa iyong pagmamahal?
Hinding-hindi giliw ko
hanggang sa libingan
O. kay sarap mabuhay
lalo na't may lambingan
Ligaya sa puso ko
ay di na mapaparam.

KATAKATAKA

KATAKATAKA
by Santiago S. Suarez

Kataka-takang mahibang
(Repeat)

Alaala ka maging gabi't araw
Alipinin mo't walang kailangan
Marinig ko lang sa labi mo, hirang
Na ako'y iibigin lagi habang buhay.

ROSAS PANDAN- Tagalog Version

ROSAS PANDAN-Tagalog Version
Visayan Folksong

Dalaga ay parang rosas
Bumabango 'pag namumukadkad
Habang hinahagkan ng araw
Lalong gumaganda ang kulay.

At ang ngumingiting talulot
Nilalapitan ng mga bubuyog
Ang mutyang iyong nililiyag
Ay tulad din pala ng rosas.

Kahit na umula't kumidlat
Kay ganda rin ng rosas
Lalong sumasariwa
Sa tubig ng paglingap.

Nguni't pag binagyo't ununos
Ang rosas ng pag-irog
Sawi ang pagsuyong
Nilanta nang paglimot.

Ganyan ang dalagang
Sawi sa kanyang irog.

Pamulinawen-Tagalog version

Pamulinawen (Tagalog Version)
Lyrics by Pastor de Jesus

Huwag kang magtampo
Iyon ay biro lamang
Di na uulit
Manalig ka Hirang
Kung galit ka pa
Parusahang lubusan
At 'yong asahang
Hindi magdaramdam

Tunay ang aking pagibig
At hindi biru-biro lamang
Ang puso ko'y sa iyo
Huwag kang magalinlangan
At kung kulang pa rin
Ay kunin mo pa yaring buhay
'Yan ay tanda ng
Sukdulang pagmamahal

Kung galit ka pa
Parusahang lubusan
At 'yong asahang
Hindi magdaramdam

Tunay ang aking pagibig
At hindi biru-biro lamang
Ang pso ko'y sa iyo
Huwag kang magalinlangan
At kung kulang pa rin
Ay kunin mo pa yaring buhay
'Yan ay tanda
ng sukdulang pagmamahal.

Paskong Bukol ng Ninong Ko lyrics-Tagalog Christmas Song

Paskong Bukol ng Ninong Ko

I

Kuripot ang ninong ko
Sa aginaldong piso
Dagling sumakit ang kanyang ulo
Sa aginaldong piso
Napudpod ang nguso ko
Sampung beses akong pinagmano

II

Ay naku ninong nalulugi pa ako
Sa pasahe sa pagpunta sa inyo
Ay naku kung laging ganyan kayo
Ay 'di na muli ako mamamasko

III

Kuripot itong ninong ko
Mayro'n namang negosyo
At maraming kuwalta sa banko
May masagwa pang bisyo
Na kung araw ng Pasko ang bahay
Ay palaging sarado

IV

Aba't itong ninong ko
Ay bigla siyang nagbago
Siya'y naging galante't bohemyo
At ang kanyang sikreto
Nabisto ng ninang ko
Na siya pala ay mayroong number two

V

Ngayon ay pasko number one at number two
Ay naghihintay na makapiling mo

VI

Kumare pala niya ang number two (patay)
kaya pati kumpare nagalit sa ninong ko
Pinukpok ang ulo ng ninong ko (aray).

Repeat IV, V, & VI

Ulo nagkabukol paskung-pasko
At nagpaskong bukol ang ninong ko.

Pasko ay Ipagdiwang lyrics - Tagalog Christmas songs

Pasko ay Ipagdiwang

I

Pasko, Pasko'y sumapit
Tayo ay magsiawit
Sa araw ng pagsilang
Hari ng kalangitan
Pasko ay ipagdiwang
Tayo ay magmahalan
Buong pusong ialay
Handog sa minamahal.

II

'Yan ang diwa at kulay
Ng Pasko sa 'ting bayan
(Pasko ay lagingipagdiwang
Limutin ang lumbay)
Tulad ng Tatlong Hari
Noong sila'y dumalaw
(Taglay nila'y maraming
Alay sa Verbong sumilang)

III

"Yan ang aral sa tao
Nitong Haring Mago
Tayo ay magbigayan
Tuwina ay magmahalan
(Pasko,Pasko'y sumapit tayo ay magsiawit)
Pasko ay pag-ibig
Na buhat sa langit.

Ulitin ang I,II, III

Dugso- Tribal

Although it originated in Mindanao, this dance falls under Tribal Dances. The dance must have originated from Bukidnon, northeastern Mindanao since they are performed as an entertainment for the deities in fiestas organized for them.It was originally thought that this dance was performed only during harvest time or upon the birth of a male heir. Women would wear colorful feathered head dresses, plaid costumes and anklets. They would step rhythmically around a bamboo arch decorated with newly-gathered palay (rice stalks) and corn, and their movements are emphasized by the tinkling sounds from the anklets.

Tinikling-Rural and Barrio Dances

Tinikling is a Filipino folk dance clasified under Rural and Barrio Dances.

The dance originated in Leyte as an imitation of the legendarily fast and graceful movements of the tikling birds as they dodged bamboo traps set by rice farmers.

An alternative explanation says that the dance originated from Spanish colonization, where field workers who worked too slowly were punished by having to stand in place and jump over two bamboo poles clapped together against their ankles; it is said that from a distance the jumping workers looked like tikling birds.[1] Often, this dance is mistakenly coined as the national dance of the Philippines instead of the Cariñosa.

The dance consists of at least one team of two people hitting two parallel bamboo poles on the ground, raising them slightly, then clapping the poles against each other near the ground with a rhythm. Meanwhile, at least one dancer hops over and around the clashing poles in a manner not entirely unlike jump roping. Usually the dancers use certain rhythms or steps.

Pandanggo Sa Ilaw -Rural and Barrio Dance

Pandanggo sa ilaw falls under rural and barrio dances which originated from Lubang Island, Mindoro

The term pandanggo comes from the Spanish word fandango, which is a dance characterized by lively steps and clapping that varies in rhythm in 3/4 time. This particular pandanggo involves the presence of three tinggoy, or oil lamps, balanced on the head and the back of each hand.

Another version of this is called Oasiwas from Lingayen, Pangasinan. After a good catch, fishermen would celebrate by drinking wine and by dancing, swinging and circling a lighted lamp. Hence, the name "Oasiwas" which in the Pangasinan dialect means "swinging." This unique and colorful dance calls for skill in balancing an oil lamp on the head while circling in each hand a lighted lamp wrapped in a porous cloth or fishnet. The waltz-style music is similar to that of Pandanggo sa Ilaw.

Itik-Itik-Rural and Barrio Dance

Itik-itik

The dance is classified under rural and barrio. It originated from Surigao del Norte, Mindanao, Philippines.

According to the story, a young woman named Kanang (short for Cayetana) was the best dancer in that province. At one baptismal celebration, she introduced new steps which were improvisations of the dance Sibay. She imitated the movements of the ducks or itik. Because of its unusual steps and fascinating interpretation, the audience began imitating her.

Apayao Courtship Dance-Mountain-Igorot Dances

image of apayao courtship dance

This is classified under Mountain and Igorot Dances. It comes from the northernmost section of the Mountain provinces. The couple raise and wave their arms and hands like the wings of a bird in flight, and the ceremonial blanket worn by the woman is lightly wrapped around her. The man's movements resemble those of a fighting cock in the preening, strutting, and flying-off-the-ground gestures.

Sa labi ng inang mahal, pagkagising;

Doon sa kasuyo ang abot ng araw;
Kamatayan pati ng simoy sa parang
Sa walang pag-ibig, ni ina, ng Bayan.

Me Piden Versos-Jose Rizal's Poem

Me Piden Versos

Piden que pulse la lira
Ha tiempo callada y rota:
Si ya no arranco una nota
Ni mi musa ya me inspira!
Balbuce fria y delira
Si la tortura mi mente;
Cuando rie solo miente;
Como miente su lamento:
Y es que en mi triste aislamiento
Mi alma ni goza ni siente.

Hubo un tiempo ... y es verdad!
Pero ya aquel tiempo huyo,
En que vate me llamo
La indulgencia a la amistad.
Ahora de aquella edad
El recuerdo apensas resta
Como quendan de una fiesta
Los misteriosos sonidos
Que retienen los oidos
Del bullicio de la orquesta.

Soy planta apenas crecida
Arrancada del Oriente,
Donde es perfume el ambiente,
Donde es un sueno la vida:
Patria que jamas se olvida!
Ensenaronme a cantar
Las aves, con su trinar;
Con su rumor, las cascadas;
Y en sus playas dilatadas,
Los murmurios de la mar.

Mientras en la infancia mia
Pude a su sol sonreir,
Dentro de mi pecho hervir
Volcan de fuego sentia;
Vate fui, porque queria
Con mis versos, con mi aliento,
Decir al rapido viento:
Vuela; su fama pregona!
Cantala de zona en zona;
De la tierra al firmamento!

La deje! ... mis patrios lares.
Arbol despojados y seco!
Ya no repiten el eco
De mis pasados cantares
Yo cruce los vastos mares
Ansiando cambiar de suerte,
Y mi locura no advierte
Que en vez del bien que buscaba,
El mar conmigo surcaba
El espectro de la muerte.

Toda mis hermosa ilusion,
Amor, entusiasmo, anhelo,
Alla quedan bajo el cielo
De tan florida region:
No pidais al corazon
Cantos de amor, que esta yerto;
Porque en medio del desierto
Donde discurro sin calma,
Siento que agoniza el alma
Y mi numen esta muerto.

BALITAW SA PAGHANGYO NGA MANGASAWA Lyrics-Cebuano (with Tagalog translation)

Balitaw sa paghangyo nga mapangasawa

Kon ikaw, 'Dong, mangasawa,
Si Tatay ug si Nanay maoy sultihi;
Kay kinsa ba'y mosaka sa kahoy
Nga sa puno-an dili mo-agi?

Matuod ikaw mao ang bulak
Sa usa ka maambong nga kahoy;
Dili ko maagi ang puno-an
Kon dili hagdanan sa imong kalo-oy.

Translation:

'Dong, kung gusto mo akong mapangasawa,
Kailangan sabihin mo sa aking tatay at nanay;
Dahil kung sino man gustong umakyat sa puno
kailangan dumaan sa punongkahoy

Totoo ba a ikaw ay magandang bulaklaka

Canto De Maria Clara-Jose Rizal's poem

Canto De Maria Clara

Donde es amigo cuanto alumbra el sol;

De un lago murmurador;
Cuando recuerdo el susurro
De Favonio que mi frente
Recreaba dulcemente
Con delicioso frescor;

Cuando miro en blanco lirio
Henchir con impetus el viento
Y el tempestuoso elemento
Manso en la arena dormir;
Cuando aspiro de las flores
Grata esencia embriagador
Que exhalan cuando la aurora
Nos comienza á sonreir;

Recuerdo, recuerdo triste
Tu faz, infancia preciosa,
Que una madre cariñosa
¡Ay! Consiguió embellecer.
Recuerdo un pueblo sencillo,
Mi contento, dicha y cuna,
Junto á la fresca laguna
Asiento de mi querer.

¡Oh! Si mi insegura planta
Holló tus bosques sombríos,
Y en las costas de tu ríos
Hallé grata diversion;
Oré en tu rústico templo
De niño, con fe sencilla
Y tu brisa sin mancilla
Alegró mi corazón.

Ví al Creador en la grandeza
De tus selvas seculares;
En tu seno los pesares
Nunca llegué á conocer;
Mientras tu azulado cielo
Miré, ni amor ni ternura
Me faltó, que en la Natura
Se cifraba mi placer.

Niñez tierna, pueblo hermoso,
Rica fuente de alegrías,
De armoniosas melodias
Que ahuyentan el pesar!
¡Volved mis horas suaves,
Volved, cual vuelven las aves
De las flores al brotar!

Mas¡ ay! Adiós! Vele eterno
Por tu paz, dicha y reposo,
Genio del bien, que bondoso
Sus dones da con amor;
Por tí mis fervientes votos,
Por tí mi constante anhelo
De aprender, y¡ plague al cielo
Conservase tu candor!

Isang Alaala Ng Aking Bayan-Translation of Jose Rizal's Poem Un Recuerdo Mi Pueblo

Isang Alaala Ng Aking Bayan

Nagugunita ko ang nagdaang araw
ng kamusmusang kong kay sayang pumanaw
sa gilid ng isang baybaying luntian
ng rumaragasang agos ng dagatan;
Kung alalahanin ang damping marahan
halik sa noo ko ng hanging magaslaw
ito'y naglalagos sa ‘king katauhan
lalong sumisigla’t nagbabagong buhay

Kung aking masdan ang liryong busilak
animo'y nagduruyan sa hanging marahas
habang sa buhangin dito'y nakalatag
ang lubhang maalon, mapusok na dagat
Kung aking samyuin sa mga bulaklak
kabanguhan nito ay ikinakalat
ang bukang liwayway na nanganganinag
masayang bumabati, may ngiti sa lahat.

Naalaala kong may kasamang lumbay
ang kamusmusan ko nang nagdaang araw
Kasama-sama ko'y inang mapagmahal
siyang nagpapaganda sa aba kong buhay.
Naalaala kong lubhang mapanglaw
bayan kong Kalambang aking sinilangan

aking nasisinag pangarap kong tuwa.

ng dakilang Diwa ng maamong palad;
tanging ikaw lamang panatang maalab

reposo a mi cerebro, silencio a mi dolor.

sus vigas y columnas maderas sin labrar;
nada vale, por cierto, mi rustica cabana;

Su citara invisible tanedo sin cesar;
pero vienen las lluvias, e impetuoso torrente
penas y abismos salta, ronco, espumante, hirviente,

que se imponga a mi mente, ni estorbo mi camino;

los atomos me trae de mundos que lejos son;

se cubre de millares, y millares de luz;

y do quiera su beso facundante estampo.

los arboles se agitan de confin a confin;

Silva, silva la noche, confusa, sterradora;
verdes, azukes llamas en el mar vense arder;

unos estan ya muertos, otros me han abandonado;
mas que importa? ...

por los campos y rios de mi pueblo natal;

la antigua melancolia siento en mi renancer;

deje, joven apenas, mi patria y mis amores,

brindando mil coronas a la inmortalidad;

y mis jovenes anos a despertar venis:

reposo a mi cerebro, silencio a mi dolor.
