The Loves of Jose Rizal-Gertrude Beckett

Gertrude Beckett

Rizal lived in a boarding house owned by the Becketts while he was annotating the Sucesos de las Islas Filipinas. One of the three Beckett daughters, a blue eyed and buxom girl named Gertrude and also known as Tottie fell madly in love with him. She taught him in his painting and sculpture.

He did not want to deceive the girl that the feeling was mutual so that he left London for Paris to avoid him. He gave him the carving of the Beckett sisters
as a gift and remembrance for their meeting.
